One thing to note when using this technique is that PHP's serialize() returns a string with two null bits for every private/protected member of an object. set_text() will choke on a string with null bits and you'll find the drag-data-received handler is never called in this case. PHP needs the null bits to unserialize() the object, so I suggest replacing null bits with another unprintable and the swapping them back. In my case, I chose the data-link-escape character which is 10 in hex. In the drag-data-get handler:
$data->set_text(str_replace("\x00","\x10",serialize($myobject)));
In the drag-data-received handler:
$myobject = unserialize(str_replace("\x10","\x00",$data->data));
