Problem

Suppose you would like to use show_all() on the top level window, but you want to exclude some hidden widgets as shown below.

How to use show all but excluding some widgets?

When you click on the "Show Treeview" button, you will get the following:

Solution

  • We can exclude widgets from show_all() by setting those widgets you wish to exclude with set_no_show_all(true).
  • To show these excluded widgets, don't forget to set set_no_show_all(false).

Output

How to use show all but excluding some widgets?

Explanation

We make use of the code from How to display a 2D array in GtkTreeView - Part 5 - get user selection? to set up the base treeview.

What's new here:

  1. Exclude the treeview from show_all().
  2. Show all! Note that treeview is now hidden.
  3. Release the exclude. Don't forget this! Otherwise treeview will not be shown.
  4. Show the treeview.
