056. How to display tooltips in GtkTreeView - Part 1?

Problem

You want to display tooltips for items in a treeview as shown below:

How to display tooltips in GtkTreeView - Part 1?

Solution

GtkTooltips::set_tip() only works on a GtkWidget. A GtkCellrenderer is not a GtkWidget. We cannot display tooltips in a treeview using GtkTooltips. So we write a small class here to display our own tooltip window.

As shown above.

Explanation

The above example is based on How to display a 2D array in GtkTreeView - Part 5 - get user selection?.

What's new here:

  1. We created the TreeviewTooltips class so as to hide the complexities and allowing the display of tooltip in treeview with a one-liner: $tooltips = new TreeviewTooltips($view)
  2. GtkTreeview::get_path_at_pos() is a handy function to get the row and column from the x,y location of the mouse.
  3. Note that $col is a GtkTreeViewColumn. Here we get the column heading with $col->get_title().
  4. Set the text of your tooltips here. Here we display tooltips for every row and column. However, with the values of both $path and $col_title, you can easily expand the code to place tooltips on selected cells of the treeview.

Note

If you have played with the above, you will find that the tooltips get displayed even for column headers. Also, because function on_enter($view, $event) continues to give x and y in the column header, the tooltip does not disappear if you move the mouse out from the treeview from the top.

We will fix these in Part 2.
