Sample Code 281: How to set up wizards using GtkDialog - Part 2 - using OOP and classes?
Written by kksou

Problem

This example gives the same result as How to set up wizards using GtkDialog - Part 1?

The only difference is that it's re-written using OOP and classes.

I came out with a Wizard class that are almost similar to the GtkAssistant.

I also encapsulated each page with a Wizard_Page class. Take a look at the example below. You will see how this class helps to make the code cleaner and easier to maintain. All the signal handlers and processing functions can be nicely encapsulated into this class.

You will find that it's now much easier to set up wizards, with the ability to set each page's contents on-the-fly (using the prepare "signal"), and carry out appropriate actions based on user's inputs (using the apply "signal") as shown below:

How to set up wizards using GtkDialog - Part 2 - using OOP and classes?

Solution

If you're comfortable with PHP's OOP, you should find the following code straightforward and self-explanatory.

If you're not too familiar with OOP, don't worry. Just copy the two classes and use them. The way to use the class Wizard is almost similar to using a GtkAssistant.

I wrote this example to show you what many people have already discovered: "The fun really begins when you know how to create your own widgets in PHP-GTK!" From the basic widgets such as GtkDialog, GtkButtons and GtkBoxes, you can mix-and-match these widgets to create your own powerful widgets. If you're keen to explore more about this, you might want to check out the ebook PHP-GTK2 Demystified.

Explanation

Would suggest that you print out a copy of the sample code from the articles How to set up wizards using GtkDialog - Part 1? and How to set up wizards using GtkAssistant - Part 2 - respond to forward button?, and compare that with the sample code above. Both produce the same output. But the sample code above uses the object-oriented approach.

What's new here:

  1. Note that the class Wizard is an extension of GtkDialog. So use it like a GtkDialog.
  2. The class Wizard_Page is an extension of GtkVBox. This is one difference between using the GtkAssistant and using the class Wizard. In GtkAssistant, you have to explicitly create a GtkVBox and append that vbox to the GtkAssistant. When you instantiate a new Wizard_Page using new(), the object itself is a vbox. So you do not need to explicitly create another vbox.
  3. Append the page to the wizard.
  4. Notice here we extend the class Wizard_Page to form another new class called Page1. The main purpose is to encapsulate all the signal handlers that are relevant only to Page 1 into this class.
  5. This is one area of improvement over the previous example. When you set the page type to "ASSISTANT_PAGE_PROGRESS", by default, the Next button will be deactivated. For this Page 1, only when the user has filled in both the name and email, then we set_page_complete() to 1. This will activate the Next button.
  6. Suppose the user filled in both the name and email, then delete both of them again. We need to deactivate the Next button. Hence this line.
  7. Notice how from Page 2 we can retrieve the values of $name and $email from Page 1. This is done in the prepare "signal handler", which is called before the page is displayed. Notice that I put the "signal handler" in quotes because this and the apply "signal handler" are not real signal handlers. They are manually called from within the method Wizard::on_button(). The concept is exactly the same as the prepare and apply signal in GtkAssistant. VIP Note: For these two "signal handlers", if you need to pass any parameters along, don't forget to pass them in as arrays. They accept only one parameter. So if you have one, pass in as array($var1). If you have four, pass in as array($var1, $var2, $var3, $var4). Take a look at the example, and you will know what I mean.
  8. If you're not familiar with OOP, don't worry. This one shows you how to set up the prepare and apply signal without using any OOP. You specify the callback function as the first parameter. You can see the callback function definition in Note 9.
  9. This is a sample of the prepare callback function using non-OOP approach.
  10. The Wizard is an extension of GtkDialog. So run it and destroy it like a GtkDialog!
